How Senior Living Communities Can Show Up in ChatGPT and AI Search Results

A family member types “best assisted living near me” into Google, and instead of ten blue links, they get a short AI-written summary with two or three communities named. Or they skip Google entirely and ask ChatGPT the same question. Either way, if your community isn’t one of the names that comes back, you never even made the shortlist.

This isn’t a future problem. According to Pew Research, 49% of U.S. adults now use an AI chatbot, and 44% have used ChatGPT specifically, more than double the 18% who had in 2023. Separately, Gartner found that 82% of consumers have already noticed AI Overviews showing up in their regular Google searches, and 60% of U.S. adults say they read those AI-generated summaries when they appear. Families searching for senior care are part of that shift, not an exception to it.

AEO Is the Answer Engine Version of SEO

AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of structuring your online presence so AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overview can actually find, understand, and cite your community when someone asks a question. It’s not a replacement for SEO. It’s built on a lot of the same groundwork, clean site structure, clear service information, real reviews, but with a different end goal: getting named directly in an AI-generated answer, not just ranking on a results page.

Gartner’s research backs up why this matters beyond just visibility. Among the consumers whose search habits have already changed because of generative AI, 71% say they’ve changed how they phrase their questions, asking more specific, conversational questions instead of short keyword searches. “Best assisted living Wilmington NC” is turning into “what’s a good assisted living community near Wilmington that specializes in memory care and has availability.” AI tools are built to answer exactly that kind of question. Most senior living websites aren’t built to be the source of that answer.

What Actually Gets a Community Cited

A few things make the difference between a community an AI tool can recommend and one it skips over:

Clear, specific service pages. A generic “our community” page doesn’t give an AI tool much to work with. Dedicated pages for independent living, assisted living, and memory care, each answering the obvious questions (cost ranges, what’s included, who it’s right for) in plain language, give these tools something concrete to pull from.

Consistent, recent reviews. AI tools weigh the same trust signals people do. A steady stream of recent reviews across Google and senior-care-specific directories matters more than a large pile of old ones.

Structured data. Schema markup (the behind-the-scenes code that labels your business type, services, and location for search engines) helps AI tools parse your site accurately instead of guessing.

Content that directly answers real questions. The single best thing a community’s website can do for AEO is answer the actual questions families ask, in plain sentences an AI tool can lift and cite, not vague brand messaging.

A caregiver smiles while helping an elderly man work on a jigsaw puzzle together at a wooden table, with family photos, tea cups, and a cane visible in a warm home setting.

Proof This Works, Even Without the Usual Advantages

The groundwork behind AEO, structured content, consistent signals, a site that holds up to scrutiny, is the same groundwork behind strong local search performance generally. New Estuary Home Care, a home care agency based in Hampstead, NC, grew organic sessions from Wilmington-based users by 138% over one year, in a market where the business has no physical address at all. That’s not an AI search case study specifically, it’s a local SEO one, but it shows what’s possible when the fundamentals (clear service content, strong local signals, a site that performs well technically) are actually in place. Those are the same fundamentals AEO builds on. Read the full case study →
